Our Story

The Early Days: Inception

The story of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star (BCS) in the United Kingdom reflects deep faith, resilience, and divine intervention. It all began in 1974 when Mother Mary Akpan (General Mother) returned to the UK from Calabar, Nigeria, following the miraculous healing of her daughter by the Holy Father. Fueled by profound gratitude and commitment, she dedicated herself to advancing the Father’s works in Britain.

Mother Akpan, alongside fellow members—Pastor E.E. Udoumoren, Apostle Ephraim Edet, and Pastor B.P. Umoren—conducted the initial worship sessions at Pastor Udoumoren’s home. As their congregation expanded, they transitioned to a rented venue at 234 Kennington Park Road, London. Additionally, Prophet Ephraim Edet hosted services at his residence at 14 Boundary Lane, which later became officially recognized as Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Camberwell Bethel.

The journey of growth continued in 1978 when Brother Ekanem (former Bishop) and Brother Cole acquired a church in Mill Hill, North London. This new headquarters, located at The Ridgeway, Mill Hill, Greater London, NW7 1QU, was inaugurated on July 29, 1978. The next day, July 30, BCS celebrated its inaugural full Sunday service, signifying a pivotal moment in its UK journey.

Mill Hill and Elephant & Castle: Growth and Expansion

The establishment of the Mill Hill Pentecostal Centre in 1978 led to the closure of 14 Boundary Lane as worshippers united under one roof. However, as challenges arose with the long travel distances, the need for a South London Bethel resurfaced, leading to the re-establishment of Camberwell Bethel.

By 1984, Camberwell Bethel had grown significantly, prompting the search for a larger venue. During this time, Sister (later Deaconess) Elizabeth Chijoke received a divine revelation about Elephant and Castle Bethel. She dreamt of the Holy Father, Leader Olumba Olumba Obu, alongside Pastor Kaseba and Pastor Briggs, standing in front of a centrally located building meant for worship. This revelation was embraced with great enthusiasm, and in February 1985, Pastor Kaseba was guided to a church for sale in Elephant and Castle. After much deliberation and fundraising, the purchase was finalised, and the first combined service was held on July 28, 1985, marking a milestone in BCS history.

Brotherhood of the Cross and Star Beyond London: Liverpool, Manchester, and Bradford

The expansion of BCS was not confined to London. In 1980, a mission to Liverpool introduced the Brotherhood to Brother Kabaku, a Nigerian diplomat. During a gathering at the Igbo Union Club, Pastor Kaseba’s message resonated deeply with the audience, leading to the baptism of Thomas Uzukwu (later Pastor) and the eventual establishment of BCS Liverpool, culminating in the purchase of Liverpool Cathedral.

Manchester also became a focal point for BCS when, on May 9, 1981, Pastor and Deaconess Mother Kaseba and other brethren visited the city as part of an evangelical tour. They met former Bishop Amadi, who was hosting services in his home, and they connected with Brother Obi through him. Inspired by the teachings, Brother Obi was baptized and later became a pastor, solidifying BCS’s presence in Manchester.

An evangelical mission in Bradford in 1981 led to encounters with Deaconess Minnette Carsi and Brother Robinson, a Caribbean man. These two individuals played a pivotal role in the establishment and growth of BCS in the city. By February 1982, Pastor E. Esenema became a driving force in nurturing the Brotherhood’s foundation in Bradford, ensuring its continuity and expansion.

Looking Back, Moving Forward

As we celebrate 50 years of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star in the United Kingdom, we reflect on the unwavering faith and dedication of those who laid the foundation. From small gatherings in private homes to establishing bethels across the country, the journey has been guided by divine grace.

We honour those who were instrumental in this mission—those still among us and those who have been called home by the Father. Their legacy lives on as we continue to expand, building upon the rich history of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star in the UK. With every step forward, we script new chapters in our story, ensuring that the light of the Holy Father shines ever brighter for generations to come.

The past 50 years have been remarkable, and as we look ahead, we embrace the future with faith, ready to continue the mission of love, unity, and spiritual enlightenment. To the next 50 years and beyond—our journey continues!
